Bail, verb: 1. To remove water from your boat; 2. To quit.

Boof, verb: The act of running your boat off a drop.

Cfs (cubic feet per second), noun: How many cubic feet of water pass through a given point per second. “The river was running 24,000 cfs.”

Class, noun: The difficulty rating of a whitewater rapid on a scale of I–VI.

Eddy, noun: Area behind an obstacle where water flows in the opposite direction of the main current. Usually a good stopping point for boaters.

Eddy out, verb: To pull into an eddy.

Gnarly, adj.: A term used to describe something particularly difficult, scary, or really cool.

Gradient, noun: Measurement of how steep a river is. Rivers with higher gradient tend to have bigger drops and more continuous rapids.

Peel out, verb: To pull out of an eddy.

Permit, noun: An official document allowing people to boat down a river. Permits are used to track users and limit numbers.

Portage, verb: To walk around a rapid; noun: A specific spot where boaters carry or line their boats around an obstacle.

Put-in, noun: The location where you put your boat into the water.

Rec level (recommended level), noun: The water level best suited for boating a river.

Scout, verb: Looking at a rapid before you run it.

Season, noun: The time of year when a river is best for boating.

Shuttle, noun: Arranging transportation between put-in and takeout so that you aren’t stranded at the end of your trip.

Takeout, noun: Where you take your boat out of the water at the end of your trip.
