Chapter 28
Cade
We took Samâs car the scant mile or so down to his parentsâ house below the cabin. I had every line of the house memorized. Iâd spent almost as much time at it as I had my own house growing up. I was probably more comfortable with Dominic and Mary Wolfe than most of the wolves in the pack. Though the thought of telling Dominic what Iâd done still burned the back of my throat and had shame crawling through my gut.
âWeâre good, Cade. Dad already knows the basics,â Sam said as he put the car in park.
âI havenât heard him howling on the warpath just yet, so Iâll take that as a good sign,â I quipped. Hope that my Alpha could do somethingâanythingâto help me win back Sarah had rooted firmly in my heart, and I was clinging to it for dear life. I rubbed my arm under my nose and scrubbed my hands over my face once more.
Losing Sarah tonight had shown me how badly I needed her and to what lengths Iâd go to fight for her.
Sam killed the engine, and we got out. The cold concrete of the driveway and sidewalk stung my bare feet. Iâd have to go back to the meadow at some point and see if my shoes had survived.
Sam didnât knock but opened the unlocked door and ushered me into his parentsâ living room. The clock on the mantel chimed softly. Two oâclock. Crap. My parents were probably starting to get concerned.
âSam, my phone is back in my truck. I need to text my parents.â
âSure.â Sam passed his phone over, and I shot a quick text to let my parents know where I was. I was just finishing as Dominic came into the room, a mug of steaming hot chocolate in his hand. He had on gray sweatpants and a plaid bathrobe, half tied and hanging off his large frame.
âWell, boys, I kind of thought these sorts of shenanigans would stop once you got a bit older,â Dominic said with a note of sarcasm as he settled into an armchair. Wolf squirmed in embarrassment as flashes of other mischievous things Sam and I had done together flashed through my brain. We plopped on the couch. âAustin called. I think Iâm pretty well in the know.â Dominic gusted a sigh. âCade, this comes at a very opportune time for you, because Iâd already made my decision this morning, but now my decision could have a life-changing effect for you.â Dominic took a sip of his hot chocolate. âThat being said, I am not pleased with the way youâve conducted yourself. Not only was it foolish timing to act on your hormones, but youâve also put a target on your back and, by extension, the packâs.â
I felt my Alphaâs disapproval down to my toes. I knew I deserved his disapprovalâI deserved more than that. I nodded, thoroughly abashed. âIâm sorry,â I squeezed past the shame lodged in my throat.
âI figured as much,â Dominic said.
