CHAPTER 17

Tammy Logan struggled with the door handle for several seconds before it dawned on her that it would not open.

‘Modified lock,’ her captor said with a grin. ‘You can do that on an old motor. Only opens with a key from outside.’ His grin became a derisory laugh. ‘Nowhere to go, sweetheart.’ He slipped the car back into gear and swung in a wide U-turn, across the road and up over the verge to go back the way he had come. ‘You see, I gave up the chase in the end and got the wagon out instead. Knew you wouldn’t have got far. Probably gone back into the woods to hide somewhere until dawn. So, all I had to do was cruise around until you popped up again. You went the wrong way too. Miles of nothing the route you chose. The other way would have got you to the village. Maddening, eh?’

Tammy Logan threw back her head and screamed for all she was worth — only to subside in a bubbling moan when the back of his hand caught her a hard blow across the face, drawing blood and opening up the split lip he had previously given her.

‘Do that again,’ he said, ‘and I’ll do a lot worse to you. Savvy?’

Seconds later, he turned off the road into a tunnel-like entrance, the headlights of the vehicle burrowing deep into dense woodland.

She saw the familiar house come into view and sat there, sick and sobbing. Ignoring her distress he parked by a big, black barn and came around to her side of the Land Rover to get her out.

‘More punishment on the cards, I’m afraid,’ he said, seizing her wrist in a vice-like grip and dragging her to the front door. ‘It’s your own fault, you know. I won’t be defied.’

‘Please,’ she choked, struggling futilely as he pulled her along the corridor towards the basement. ‘Why are you doing this to me? I’ve done nothing to you. You have no right—’

‘Right?’ he echoed with a snarl, stopping a moment to press his face close to her. ‘I have every right. Yet again, you have mocked the Almighty, and His will must be obeyed.’

‘You — you’re crazy,’ she shrieked. He seemed not to hear. Dragging her into the basement room, he threw her onto the bed. Then, locking the door, he stalked into the bathroom. Seconds later, she heard the tap running . . .

The figure in the black hooded coat and dark trousers parked the car in a gateway in the same narrow back road that had provided an escape route for Tammy Logan a few hours before. She lowered the window to listen.

The moon had been out, but had since retreated behind scudding clouds, and the night was deathly still, the trees and shrubs choking the verges impenetrable to the naked eye. A ghostly winged shape — a barn owl possibly — flashed by close to the road within feet of the parked vehicle and from somewhere in the depths of the woodland, a vixen shrieked.
