CHAPTER NINE
Ishir woke up locked in Zeeâs arms. Everything was warm, the foreign hotel bed made familiar by the scent of Zee everywhere.
He closed his eyes. His body ached, and so did his soul. He felt as if heâd run an emotional marathon, left depleted and hungover with exhaustion.
âHey,â Zee murmured from behind him. It was soft. Tentative. His large hands were splayed on Ishirâs hip, his stomach.
Ishir wanted to stay there forever, and it hurt to know that would never be possible. âHey.â
They were silent for a while. Ishir tried to recapture some of the acceptance heâd felt the previous nightâthe ability to appreciate the simple act of having without it being tarred by keeping.
They lay there until Ishirâs phone went off, signalling they had to get up for team breakfast. Ishir leaned over to the bedside table and turned it off. Zee had plugged in both their phones the previous night, each on their own nightstand like this was routine.
Ishir tried to untangle himself, but Zee didnât let him get far, rolling him onto his back.
âYou okay?â Zee asked, brown eyes piercing.
âYeah. Iâm okay.â
Zee nodded, still searching his face.
âYou?â
âYeah. Just. I meant to talk about it before, you know? About, likeâ¦helping you out myself instead of choosing some random Alpha.â He said the last words derisively. No one but me is good enough for you, they implied.
Ishir wanted to laughâthat sentiment hit closer to home than Ishir wanted to admit. âI mean, I didnât ask what was going to happen, either. Guess I was scared to.â
Zee winced. âRight. I, uhâ¦thatâs probably my bad.â
Ishir swallowed. âWhy donât we talk about it?â The question was soft, almost inaudible.
Zeeâs gaze flickered away. âDo you want to stop?â
Ishir had to take a few beats to process that. âWhat does that have to do with talking about it?â He could see the struggle on Zeeâs face. The fear.
âI justâ¦canât we just keep doing this? Does it have to have a name?â As if talking about it and defining it were the exact same thing.
Maybe if Ishir were older and more mature. If he hadnât loved Zee desperately for so long. If he wasnât so used to hiding pieces of himself. Maybe then, heâd have had the capacity to say, âNo, letâs talk about it. I canât live like this.â
Instead, Ishir let it go.
âOkay,â he said and meant it. He rolled off the bed, away from the nest of their combined scents. âI take first shower, though.â
âDeal.â
And that was that.
