For the November holidays I went to Izhevsk myself and saw them all, both the people's artist and Sasha, a bit later. We agreed with Seryozha ("How I Got Like That") that he would invite Sasha when I came. The people's artist is not at all an old man, as he appeared from Seryozha's story. Just of the post-war school. And his studio isn't a basement, as I imagined too out of habit. A big clean room in a new building, not a spot of dust. Pictures like in the Palace of Culture. And the people's artist was very quiet, polite, careful that his name shouldn't get into the story. And it wouldn't be bad if some new gangster coming to take his place were to publicly defame him among their directors, write to Krokodil, break everything he has, and send him out into the world. Then maybe he would turn into a people's artist.

And Sasha came for the holiday. Here they are: Seryozha and Sasha next to each other. Seryozha "How I Got Like That" has a pleasant playful breeze in his head, he's a dancer, and his dorm-mates sense that somehow he's not like they are, and like him for it, unconsciously they even flirt. And Sasha has already gotten so used to sitting there at home reading about medieval Russia and the Church that he'll just keep doing it. Until something falls into his lap. Like when he knew for sure someone was coming from Moscow to visit Seryozha, then he came too. And was waiting to see what would come of it. But things don't start by themselves. I think his heart was sinking. But he didn't let on. In bed, though, he was so willing, so gentle. So skinny, warm, young. He found everything that was done to him sweet. He touched my cock with a tentative hand. Again, only if I put his hand there myself. But he wouldn't have done it on his own, just in case.

And I would predict for him the following path. He really should go into the Church. There all his lines would meet. He couldn't even pass his favorite subject, history, at the institute, because he more or less knew only medieval Russia. Such a wonderful narrowness. What a gift to love one thing and not look to the right or the left. And his mind set is humble, not creative. He'll remember what happened when, what people's names were, what rank. But so much the better! And somehow surprisingly pleasant. Therefore he won't become a heretic-theologian, a Florensky in the pride of his mind. He'll just be a good, obedient holy father. Seryozha says, what do you mean, how can he go against his father and mother (his father's a party organizer at the collective farm, his mother a schoolteacher); it would be a shame for them. Oh no, Seryozha. Sasha only has to work up his patience, explain things to his parents like he should. Anti-religious
