Chapter Fifteen
What Are You?
Luke is waiting for us in front of the abandoned building when Keiran, Arianthe, and I arrive shortly before eight that night.
âHey man,â Keiran greets Luke with the sort of half handshake-fist bump thing that all guys seem to do.
âIâd say that youâre late, but it looks like Iâm the one who is early.â Luke laughs as he greets Arianthe with a kiss on the cheek. When he stops in front of me he pulls me into a loose hug so he can whisper in my ear, âI was afraid you would look different today. Iâm glad you donât.â
âWhy would I look different?â I ask in confusion.
Luke ignores my question and releases me. He turns back to Keiran and says, âHave you ever thought of giving this old place a nickname or something other than just âthe old V.A. homeâ?â
âHmm, I never really thought about it before, but we probably should think something up,â Keiran replies thoughtfully as he and Luke head inside the dark building.
âWhat about âthe creepy building on the hillâ?â Arianthe suggests as she stares up at the crumbling brick façade.
âThatâs too obvious,â I laugh off her suggestion as I follow the guys inside. âWhat about âThe Haunted Havenâ?â
The guys mull over my suggestion for a few minutes until Luke slowly nods at Keiran in silent agreement. Keiran smiles, âI like it. From now on weâll call it âThe Haunted Havenâ or T.H.H. for short.â
âCool,â Arianthe agrees as she heads into the cafeteria. She turns back towards Keiran and asks, âHey Keiran, can you help me set up the chairs? Theyâre heavy.â
âSure,â Keiran wipes his palms on his dark pants and follows Arianthe into the cafeteria.
I stop Luke before he has a chance to join them, âCan we talk for a minute before the others get here?â
Luke shrugs nonchalantly, âYeah, why not.â
I lead Luke down the decrepit hallway to one of the old patient rooms. A twin bed with a mattress with a large rust colored stain in the center is pushed against one wall.
âThis place is so screwed up looking,â Luke murmurs as he looks around. He spots an old wooden chair without a seat on the opposite wall and flips it around before lowering himself onto it.
I chip away at the paint peeling off the nearest wall, âI donât know, Iâve always sort of been fascinated by abandoned buildings like this. Thereâs so much history, both good and bad, lurking within these walls.â
âIâve had to sleep here a few times when I didnât have anywhere else to go. I can always sense the residual pain draping itself over me like a heavy coat.â Luke murmurs reverently. He clears his throat and snaps out of his thoughts, âso what did you want to talk to me about?â
âWhat did you mean when you said that you were afraid that I would look different today?â I ask as I kick at a crack in the old linoleum floor.
âYou know what I meant Lizette; youâre part succubus.
