"Crap," Eva muttered as her face flamed. "Why would she call me out like that?"
Eris just laughed, clapping her hands together. "This is fantastic." Wiping tears from her eyes, she was laughing so hard, Eva wanted to slap her just for the heck of it.
"Stop." She swatted at Eris instead. "Don't draw any more attention to us."
But she didn't need to bother. The crowd had already moved on and were talking amongst themselves again.
Eva relaxed a bit and took in the party surrounding her. Strained music seemed to be coming from everywhere all at once.
It was hauntingly beautiful, as though the singer was putting all of their pain and anguish, love, and even heartbreak into the words that Eva couldn't quite understand.
The melody floated over her skin, and no matter which way she twisted her head, the notes remained at the exact same volume.
When she turned to Eris, about to ask about the music and where it was coming from, she saw Leo across the room behind her.
"Leo!" She waved a hand in the air, and his head snapped in her direction.
"Oh." He crossed the room to their sides, and then a bright smile broke out across his face. "Thanks for coming, Eva. You look amazing." Leo wolf-whistled and turned Eva in a little circle, so he could see her outfit.
"Excuse me?" Eris poked him in the shoulder, mock jealousy on her face. "What about me?"
He laughed, and then pulled her into a hug. "Cousin," he said and then kissed Eris on the cheek. "I haven't seen you in ages. How are you?" He overemphasized the last part, and Eva laughed at the obvious attempt at making fun of someone.
"Shut up, you dolt. You saw me yesterday for lunch." Eris pinched his arm. "Now. Tell me why I wasn't invited."
Leo walked them out of the middle of the floor and over to a corner in relative seclusion.
"Apparently," he started. "You were seen with a certain nymph, and now my mother thinks you're doing things to purposefully aggravate her."
"What?" Eris laughed derisively. "You've got to be kidding me."
"Nope," Leo popped his lips on the last syllable, raising his eyebrows.
"So," Eva rolled her eyes. "Who cares that Eris is fooling around with a nymph. Your mom should be the last person in the world to care about that."
"She doesn't care about anyone else." Leo nodded his head toward where his mother was standing with a few other gods that Eva didn't recognize. "She cares when Eris does, because Eris is the only one to call my mother on her bull. So now, she takes it upon herself to wreak havoc in Eris's love life."
Eva stared at him, openmouthed. Affronted. That's how she felt, and it wasn't even her life that was being meddled with.
"How long has this been going on?" She looked at Eris, who just glanced away, clearly not wanting to answer her.
Well tough cookies, Eva wanted to know. "Leo," she turned on him, her voice raising slightly. "Tell me."
"Well, I'd say it's been at least a hundred years, if not more.
