CONNOR

CONNOR RETURNED TO the bedroom feeling clean and refreshed, dressed in lounge pants. He was holding a tray with coffee, orange juice, and croissants.

Lee had also showered, opened the window, and made the bed. He was sitting on the bed wearing the same shorts and T-shirt from the night before and studying his phone.

"Breakfast is served," Connor said. "Unfortunately, I had no champagne."

"Champagne?"

"This is a celebration breakfast. The first breakfast I've ever had with someone who I could describe as my boyfriend." Connor passed Lee a glass of orange juice and picked up the other for himself.

They clinked their glasses together.

Lee smiled. "Well, come on, boyfriend. Sit next to me on the bed so I can take a photograph and we can social media it to the world, and all that."

"Ha bloody ha. I think you want to keep it quieter than I do. Maybe I'm paranoid, but are you embarrassed by me?"

Lee drank, then put the empty glass down. "Certainly not embarrassed. I'm looking forward to seeing all my friends and telling them we're a couple. They'll enjoy taking the piss, of course, but only because you're so hot."

"You can tell Tom when he comes around later this morning, or shall I?"

Tom was booked to have a look around Connor's home and, hopefully, start as the new cleaner very soon.

Connor's former cleaner was a friend of his extended family. Maria knew everyone. In preparation for what he hoped would happen over the weeks ahead with Lee, Connor had made an excuse about no longer needing her services. He didn't want to come out via his cleaner noticing personal details in his apartment.

"You can tell your gay friends, but no social media pictures?" Connor passed a croissant on a plate to Lee.

"All my adult life I've worked in construction and been gay. I've kept the two things completely separate. Suddenly, you're into guys too, and you're my boyfriend, and overnight you think I should come out? That's too much."

No, Connor was mucking about and hoped Lee didn't take him seriously. With so many things new and uncertain in his life, Connor didn't want everyone to know about his new relationship, no matter how good it was.

"Fortunately, we're of like mind. I'm not sure it'd be a good move coming out at work. I guess long-term we'd have to tell people. They might notice when we're living together, married, with kids." Connor laughed.

"If we never wear our wedding rings, they may never guess."

"When we get married, Lee, I hope you'd want to wear my ring," Connor joked.

"So, how do you see your life with your husband after your wedding?" Lee played along.

"Well, I'll be the managing director of a scaffold company, employing about sixty workers and sixteen office staff, so life will be busy and stressful. When I get home each night, I'll need serious relaxation time in the hands of my hunky man."

"He'd have to be someone who can take your mind off work."

"We'd go for walks, and for barbecues with our mates, and we'd go watch football on the weekends.
