CHAPTER 13

Trevor frowned, narrowing his eyes on the road ahead as he lowered his chin and powered into the curve. His legs moved around and around, pushing the pedals on his bike, almost as if they were the ones controlling him and not the other way around. When he couldn’t get out to the ocean to clear his head among the waves, he liked to put some distance between himself and his problems with his bike. As he forced himself to charge up the last hill on his route, he let go of everything, giving in to the burn of lactic acid in his legs, the trickle of sweat running down his back, and did not stop until he got there.

Finally he sat up on his seat, a small smile of triumph appearing on his face as he exhaled and let himself coast down and around the corner. These last few days had been too much. First Debbie’s accident and then the funeral and now all this crazy stuff with Laine. He pulled the bike off the road and grabbed his water bottle, taking a long, steady sip. He had no idea how to try to make things better for her, how to make things right between them. Ever since she’d found out about Debbie, she’d been pushing him away, and now she was all caught up in this damn Ouija board. He tutted to himself, stashing his water bottle back in the holder bolted to the frame of the bike. He knew she was grieving, but he had thought she was smarter than this.

He paused outside a pedestrian tunnel that cut under the road ahead and wiped down his forehead with his shirt, watching as the fluorescent lights inside blinked on and off.

“Maybe it’s a message from Debbie,” he muttered to himself as he pushed the bike inside.

Trevor did not believe in ghosts. He didn’t believe in fairies or spaceships or making wishes either, as much as he wished he did. If there was anything he could do to take this pain away for Laine, he would jump at the chance, but she was so dead set on keeping him at arm’s length, to keep going with this ghost crap. And he was certain Pete was encouraging her. The chain on his bike clicked rhythmically as he walked farther into the tunnel, the lights overhead going out one by one before they flashed back into life for just a moment and then flickered back into darkness.

He heard footsteps up ahead and pulled the bike closer to the wall of the tunnel, waiting for someone to pass him, but no one came. He looked over his shoulder at the bright sunshine and considered the tight, stinging sensation on his nose. Sunburned again. Laine was going to kick his ass. Or at least she was if she was still talking to him.

There were the footsteps again.

“Hello?” Trevor called into the darkness, a chill running over his damp back. It was cold inside the tunnel, sheltered from the bold sunlight outside.
