Chapter Sixteen

“She was doing what when you got there?” Raven screeches as she stares at me, dark eyes going wide with shock before turning hard and flinty. “If that asshole didn’t shove her away I’m going to kick his ass,” she threatens.

We’re all sitting in a booth at the back of the bar, going over paperwork and schedules. Well, not Raven, she’s here for the free lunch we had Marvin cook up for us. But she’s definitely a welcome addition, especially with her being so pissed about my story about the other morning.

“He was about to,” I hurry to assure her. “He kept telling her to leave and that he didn’t want her.”

“That woman is nuts,” Piper comments, looking at me with concern. “You need to be careful, Ash. You never know who she’s connected to.”

“Maybe you should have the guys look into her,” Ember suggests, frowning thoughtfully. “You know I hate the idea of bringing them into anything, but this might work in our favor.”

I groan at the thought. “And have them get in Nix’s face about her? You and I both know, Em, Sloan will go all protective asshole and try to make it seem like it’s worse than it is.”

I love my brother, but Sloan can be over the top when it comes to taking care of his family. Especially Ember and I. Hell, he did a background check on Wolf before they even met him. I frown at that thought. Wait. He probably did the same to Nix already, but didn’t let me know that information. I narrow my eyes.

“Uh-oh,” Ember laughs. “What’s that death look for?”

“Do you think Sloan did a check on Nix?” I ask her.

Ember rolls her eyes. “You’re only just thinking about that now?” she asks wryly. “The second you told them about the baby they probably called the damn National Guard to find out about him. They might already know about Shondra too.”

Anger burns in my belly. My family are protective, sure, and any other time I would be okay with it, but not with Nix. Nix has been honest from the start, and they have no right to pry into his life. They should also trust me to know how to take care of myself. I don’t need my family to double check everything I do, or investigate who is going to be in my life. “I’ll deal with them later,” I growl.

Ember laughs. “I’m going to be there when you do, right?”

“To make sure I don’t kill them?” I ask with a wry grin.

“You are pregnant and hormonal,” Piper points out with a laugh. “You’re crazy on your own, but add in those and you’re working your way up to Raven crazy if you’re not careful.”

Raven gives her the finger in reply, making us all laugh. “No one’s my brand of crazy, bitch,” she tells Piper flippantly.

Piper snickers. She looks at me. “You’re a hell of a lot nicer than me. If some bitch had their hands on my man’s dick I wouldn’t be anywhere near as nice.
