CHAPTER XIV

AUTHENTICITY

We drove again, taking the patrol car the few short blocks to the bar. Dani was waiting outside, much like she’d been the day before.

“Sorry, you had to wait,” Shay said, pulling the car up beside her. Shay hit the trunk release, and I walked around to grab the backpack, letting Dexter loose from the back seat.

“It’s not a big deal,” Dani assured her. “I could have gone in, but I thought it would be better if we all went together.

Keep a low profile and all.” Dani unlocked the back door, and we all followed her inside. The steel shelves sat packed with cases of liquor.

“Restocked the shelves?” Shay asked.

“Amelia and Diana have been taking care of business. Amelia will be here later. She might be a little too excited about the bar.”

“Really?” She and Dani wedged their hands in the wall to pull the hidden door open.

“Yep, I’m pretty sure she and Diana are going to split the workload to keep this place on track.”

I let out a sigh of relief, a little louder than I’d intended. “That’s fantastic to hear,” I said.

“Yes, I couldn’t agree more.” Dani laughed as she walked through the doorway and down the stairs. Dexter and Stout followed her, and I helped Shay pull the door behind us.

“I didn’t mean to imply—”

Shay tapped her fingers against my mouth. “It’s fine, love. None of us are ready to retire and pour beer all day.”

I kissed her fingertips. “I’m really glad.” We descended the stairs together, hand in hand.

“So, what’s the plan?” Dani asked as she turned a chair over to sit.

“Wildwood and I just put a barrier of protection around the carriage house.”

“I thought you already had one?” Dani asked.

“Something came after her last night,” Shay explained as she unpacked the bag. “Somehow, they know about the hammer, and they’re coming for it.”

“Yes, I suppose they would. According to dad’s journals, the powers of evil have been trying to possess that damn thing for hundreds of years.” Dani leaned her forearms against the table in front of her. She knew more about Brigid’s hammer than she was willing to share, and I wondered why she was holding back from us and, more specifically, from Shay.

I hesitated for a second, wondering if I had the right to interrogate our friend, but last night was terrifying, and secrets kept meant trouble for all of us. “What do you know about the hammer?” I blurted the question.

Dani took a quick breath, and I wondered if her reaction was frustration or disappointment. “I know my father was obsessed over the damn thing.” She picked at the splintered wood of the tabletop. “His desire to find it possessed him like a drug.”

I didn’t understand why Jacob had never found it. I’d only had the Maker's power for a short time before hearing Brigid’s call, but I understood the uncontrollable thirst to find it. That compulsion forced me to the mine, drawing me toward the unknown dangers buried in the dark.
