DARLENE invited Larry in for a beer when they got back from Austin. They sat at the kitchen table and Larry repeated the details he’d told her earlier about how they were making the money.

“I’m not against the kidney because you’re sewing the person up and they will recover in time. The hearts pay the most, and the livers are second, but then you’re a murderer, and I don’t think I could go that far.”

Larry’s cell rang and it was Vince. Larry put it on speaker so Darlene could hear. “Hey, Larry, where the hell is Phil? I couldn’t get ahold of him.”

“He’s away today. Did you get an order?”

“I need a liver for tonight. Can you help me out?”

“I think I can. I’ll call you from the city when I have it.”

“Thanks, Larry. You’re the best.”

Larry looked at Darlene as she thought about it for a few minutes. “Okay, I’ll give it a try. What time do you usually go?”

“We can go now. It’s dark and it will take us an hour to get there.”

“Do we have equipment to get ready?”

Larry smiled. “I’m so happy you’re doing this with me, Darlene. You’re a nurse and I’m an almost doctor. It will be so much easier than with Phil gumming things up for me.”

“He doesn’t mean to be a dumb ass, Larry. He just is.”

“Bringing Norman was the biggest dumb ass thing he could have done. That’s over now. Maybe the lawyer you hired can get him out of that mess.”

“I hope so. I had to hand over twenty K to get him started. I’m going to need more money.”

Larry grinned. “Let’s go get some.”
