[322–380]
Your country, greatest when in greatest danger, turns
Upon the sneerers her grim glare of hardihood;
While laggard states pursue their dark manoeuvres, cold
With caution, and blink weakly at their enemies.
Will you not go, son, and bring help, first to the dead,
And then to these sad women in their desperate need?
You’ll march with Justice at your side; I have no fear
For you. And though I see Thebes now proud in success,
My trust is, at the next throw she will find the dice
Fall otherwise. The gods stretch greatness in the dust.
