Marty Skriver is seen competing in the junior men’s final at Shelter Cove, which he won with rides like this. According to Scott Blackman, “It was a long drive to reach this contest in an isolated stretch of California’s coast. The ABSC members slept in sleeping bags, outside by their cars, for the weekend. We returned to Oregon with increased respect for Marty’s surfing. He took first place against stiff competition.” (Courtesy of Mary Ann Machi, NSSA.)

John Heath “Doc” Ball presents Marion Bowers with one of his two trophies at the Shelter Cove contest in Northern California in May 1966. Ball was very influential in the growth of surfing in California, especially between the 1930s and 1950s. Along with being a surfer, he is considered the first truly dedicated surf photographer. Seen here wearing their club jackets are, from left to right, ABSC members Dave Holbrook, Marty Skriver, Larry Tucker (partially hidden), and Bruce McEntee. (Courtesy of Mary Ann Machi, NSSA.)
