Chapter Seven

The sight of an old man stepping out of the shadows should have startled me, but at this point, nothing surprised me. We were lost in the jungle without food or water or any clue how to get out of wherever it was we were, and we were being hunted by backwoods locals.

I hoped it wasn’t for our virtue because we had lost that long ago.

I glanced at Danny.

Well, most of us had.

“Uh, guys.” I nodded toward the old man.

He looked ancient. His hair was almost pure white and hung in a long braid down over his shoulder. His eyebrows matched and were in need of a serious trim. They were thick and bushy as if possessed.

He wore dark pants and some sort of brown poncho that hung all the way to his knees. A collection of handmade necklaces hung around his neck and down to his chest.

Was that a chicken bone?

It was the odd-looking staff that really caught my interest. He used it like a walking stick, but the carvings on it said it was more than that.

What that more was, I had no idea.

The old man stopped a few feet from me and clasped both hands around his walking stick. He looked at each one of us, his gaze intense as if he was looking for something.

“Do you speak English?”

I could hope.

“I do,” the old man replied. “I also speak French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Farsi.”

My eyebrows went up. “You speak Farsi?”

He smiled. “I am well traveled.”

That’s what I wanted to be. Well traveled. Although, this guy looked as if life had traveled right over his face. I couldn’t even begin to guess his age, but I suspected it had three digits.

“Can you help us get to a phone?”

“No phone.”

Crap.

“Is there any type of authority around here?”

I could hope.

“There is,” the old man said, “but he leads the men who are chasing you.”

Double crap.

“This entire area is run by the Republic.”

Triple crap.

I was quickly running out of crap.

I turned to look at the others, my heart constricting. “If they figure out why we’re here…”

I didn’t think I needed to say more.

The old man looked thoughtful for a moment before saying, “They believe you are wealthy tourists and wish to hold you for ransom.”

Well, at least our cover story was holding.

“Look, we came down here looking for a friend. Our car was stolen and those guys started chasing us. We need to get to a phone.”

“It is late.” The old man started walking back toward the thickness of the trees. “Come with me. I will take you to a phone at first light. You can rest in my home until then.”

“Oh, thank god.” Andrew started after the man.

Danny pushed up his glasses and then hurried after Andrew.

I was a little more hesitant. It seemed too easy for some stranger to find us in the middle of the jungle when we were being chased. I glanced at Ewan and Kaito to see if they were feeling the same apprehension.

I could tell from the frowns on their faces, they were.
