Remy gathered a stack of tourist brochures, smacked them on the table to line them up, and then clipped everything together using a jumbo binder clip. Since she lived upstairs and wouldn’t have to transport everything far, she stuffed them into a padded envelope and moved on to the rest of the stuff in front of her.

There was a purple folder labeled KIDS, a pink folder labeled LADIES, a green folder labeled GENTS, and a floral folder labeled FAMILY.

A pile of portable items like sunscreen, lip balm, and face spray was on one side of her spot. Two disposable cameras in a clear plastic zipper bag sat on the other side.

The most important thing, however, was a sheaf of stapled papers with their New York itinerary and travel details.

Seeing the Knight Phoenix logo brought a smile to her face. The New York adventure would be their first big test as a transportation conglomerate. She and Blaze spent hours coordinating with the East Coast division, arranging air travel and ground transportation in every conceivable form—from limos, bikes, and scooters to a party bus.

Beside her, Domineau was haphazardly stuffing everything into a backpack.

“Hey,” Remy muttered. “What’s the rush?”

“Oh, heh heh.” Domineau chuckled. “I know, right?” She checked her watch. “Molly has an early dismissal today, and I promised her we could work on Kelly’s candles together.”

“How’s that coming? Did you settle on a scent?”

“Lavender with a hint of vanilla and lemon verbena. Rafe was partial to the citrus scents, and Kelly gave her okay for the lavender blend. Thanks for offering to hand paint the glass holders.”

“It’s what I do,” she replied. “Art is my antidepressant. It’s better than popping a pill.”

“You’re my spirit animal,” Domineau drawled teasingly.

Remy felt Domineau’s shrewd gaze. The assessment was hard to miss. She asked, “Did I grow another ear or something?”

Not one to dance around an issue, Domineau remarked in a semi-teasing voice, “You don’t look like dog shit anymore although we need to talk about concealer for the near-death smudges under your eyes.”

She punched her well-meaning friend in the arm. “Shut up. I don’t look that bad, and if I have dark circles, it’s because getting Knight Phoenix up and running is two full-time jobs.”

The astute appraisal of her well-being continued, only this time Domineau’s comment had legs.

“You’ve lost weight, not that you had extra to spare. What’s up with that?”

“The infection kicked my ass. When it moved into my chest, all the meds they gave me wreaked havoc on my stomach. Some days, I eat everything in sight, and others, just thinking about food makes me gag.” She shrugged. “Finn packs my lunch every day. He’s like a live-in nutritionist. Yippee.”

“I’m gonna let it go because I’ve no doubt Beantown is watching you like a hawk. But Remy, gurl, slow down and get involved in your health. You were really, really sick. This isn’t something you should ignore, and no amount of wishing is going to make everything better. I know self-care is anathema to you and that a white coat and a stethoscope set you off, but please get your shit together.
