Chapter 16

The snow had disappeared. Kayta paused with her load of buffalo chips to scan the grassy hills dotted with pines, praying again for Tarken’s return, wishing she could be one of the circling hawks. A spray of white asters caught her eye and she plucked one for her hair. Ah, over there was another pile of buffalo chips! Old and dry. Good. Chips had seemed disgusting at first, but they were little more than compressed and dehydrated grasses, like little grass briquettes. It was as if the buffalo and cattle made this as yet another gift for the people.

When she got back, she built up the fire and got Lote comfortably situated in the spotty sunlight. He liked visitors and enjoyed chatting, which he did not consider gossip. His observations were as delightful as the warmth from the fire. She stretched her feet towards it.

Lote said, “I am glad to see that you and Leesie have become friends. Did you know that she actually went on a horse raid last year? She captured two horses, including that prize black. She’s brave. Lynx has his hands full with that one! She is quite different from the first wife, Marks Her Lodge, who strikes me as elegant and icy.”

Lote shifted his backrest. Kayta jumped up to get him a shoulder cloak.

“I’m fine. Relax.”

“Why is Yells At Buffalo so named?”

Lote sipped his tea. “Well, this isn’t my clan, but I have heard the story. When she was about ten, some young ruffians chased a bison into camp to cause mischief.”

“Right into camp?”

“It was a major offense and they were banned from camp for two months. Anyone who tried to sneak food to them or talk to them was banned as well.”

“Good.”

“At any rate, the buffalo ran right at Yells At Buffalo’s mother’s lodge, snorting and angry. Everyone scattered, except Yells At Buffalo. Her grandmother had made her a new play lodge and it was pitched right in the buffalo’s path.

“Little Yells At Buffalo rushed at that buffalo. I can imagine her screaming, with little braids flying, arms waving. Everyone says that the buffalo charged her rather than the play lodge, but by this time men had mounted their horses and shot it. The buffalo crashed to the ground in front of Yells At Buffalo. Her parents were horrified at her foolishness, but all the same, everyone admired her bravery. So they called her Yells At Buffalo. Topi says he is the buffalo now, but that is not true. Yells At Buffalo is a first wife of three, his sits-beside-him wife, a sweet, devoted woman who has given him three sons and a daughter, and loves his other wives’ six children.” Lote laughed as he mused. “Topi is a tease! I wish more people had their taproot sunk into life’s spring of contentment. His happy manner reminds me of William, Tarken’s grandfather.”

“Tell me about him.”

Lote detected a whiff of romance in her tone. He was glad Shaille welcomed her, and Shaille had whispered that Dawn Hair had appeared as a sandhill crane in her vision.
