Chapter 30
It had been a few days since Craig had left and the three of them were back into their old routine. Gemma could tell Rupert and Dulcie were missing him, but they also looked tired. Theyâd had a busy week socialising and being out and about in both Graingcia and Roncia, and it had all clearly taken its toll on them. Early nights, late mornings and relaxing in the sunshine were now the order of the day. After all, lazy days relaxing in a warm climate were one of the main reasons for coming to Spain.
Gemma also noticed that Rupert and Dulcie often appeared to be whispering to each other, abruptly stopping whenever she joined them. That was rather out of character, she thought, and another thing was that she hadnât seen Dario since their trip to Ikea. Sheâd had texts from him updating her on progress. Wardrobes had been ordered, and would arrive with the beds and sofas. Gemma had arranged by text to walk down to Darioâs later the next day when everything would have been delivered and arranged in the apartments.
âMorning, youâre looking very dapper, Rupert. Oh, yes, itâs your morning out with the gang isnât it?â
âYes, thatâs right. Weâre meeting up in Roncia and going to the little café in the courtyard beside the church for lunch. An authorâs been invited to give a talk, which will make a nice change, and then afterwards heâll be showing us around the historic buildings. Iâm actually looking forward to it as thereâll be less booze and gossip than usual.â
âLess gossip! Thatâs a surprise. I thought that was the only reason you went to the coffee morning. Weâll be so disappointed, wont we, Gemma, if he comes back without sharing news of a scandal?â
âVery funny. I hope you both have a nice day, and by the way if I hear any gossip I wonât be repeating it when I come back, so there.â
âWhat rubbish, Rupert. Itâs impossible for you to not repeat things. Anyway, we look forward to hearing all about it later.â
âSo, Dulcie, do you fancy doing anything today? A walk down into the town for a spot of lunch or just a coffee?â
âActually, thatâs is a good idea. I fancy a club sandwich and half a lager, but Iâm not able to walk that far and back, dear. Weâll get Dario to bring us up the hill, if thatâs alright with you. Are you on better terms now?â
âYes, weâre getting on fine, thanks, Dulcie, although itâs quite a complicated story. What time do you want to leave?â
Gemma could tell by the expression on Dulcieâs face that she was curious about what she had meant about Dario. It would be good to tell her about Dario being a father as she knew Dulcie wouldnât repeat it to anyone. She was a wise old lady and able to see things from a different perspective, this giving sensible advice.
âLetâs leave about twelve noon, shall we, dear? Iâd quite like to have a look in that ladies clothes shop as well.
