Jareth

Aline was cowering in the corner, her eyes fixed on the darkness outside. The howls were drawing closer, filling the air with ominous vibrations.

“To the storage room, quick!” Jareth shouted.

As the words left his mouth, a hairy beast came crashing through the window. It landed on the floor, producing a loud thud, then pushed off with its claws and stood upright, peering at the people in the cabin with bulging hazel eyes while baring its sharp fangs. It seemed smaller than the creature Jareth had seen before, and its black fur was riddled with pale yellow streaks.

The beast growled, then lunged forward, extending its claws. Jareth raised the rifle and pulled the trigger. Following a thunderous crack, the bullet left the barrel, soared through the air, and sank into the werewolf’s chest. The beast dropped to the floor, its high-pitched whimper blending with the echo of the shot.

Jareth’s eyes were drawn to the smoke rising from the muzzle. Amidst the chaos, it brought back memories of all the hunts he went on with his father as if his mind was grasping for something familiar to keep itself from breaking.

His momentary reverie was shattered by another howl. Seconds later, the cabin door burst open, and a second werewolf leaped inside. It was a bit bigger than the one lying on the floor, and it had brown fur and large blue eyes. The beast glanced at its injured comrade, then released a furious snarl before charging at Jareth.

The time seemed to slow as the man took a step back while his hand slid to the bolt handle of the rifle, pulling it backward with a sturdy yank. He ejected the empty cartridge, then pushed the handle forward, chambering the next round. His heart skipped a beat as, for a split second, he thought that the gun had jammed. Then, he heard the blessed click, indicating it was once more ready to unleash its wrath upon the beastly intruders.

The werewolf was just a few yards away when Jareth fired again, lodging the bullet into its head. The creature staggered backward and dropped to its knees, splattering thick blood from a large hole below its right eye.

“Take Aline and run!” Jareth screamed, looking at Emily standing behind him.

The woman flinched, his voice awakening her from shock-induced stupor. She rushed to Aline, cowering in the corner, took hold of her arm, and pulled her up before tugging her into the narrow hallway leading to the back of the cabin. Meanwhile, Jareth chambered the third round, looking at the two beasts. Though maimed, their eyes still gleamed with a ravenous fury, along with a hint of something familiar. Something that sent chills down his spine and gave rise to the utmost dread that briefly shackled him in place.

The beast with blonde streaks rose from the ground, and he saw its jaw moving awkwardly, producing hoarse clicks and grunts. Then, out of that creepy jumble arose his name: “Jareth,” which made his mind tremble, allowing an idea to pass through the walls guarding his sanity.
