SAINT RICHARD’S FIRE

BOURBON

“This one’s awake,” yelled an oddly accented, squeaky voice.

Bourbon opened his eyes slowly, spotting a very green goblin watching him. His gut reaction to go for his weapon was stopped only because she was wearing a white nurse’s outfit from an old TV show. That and the other large, very heavily armed-+ goblin.

“Hello, lass,” offered Bourbon as he tried to sit up. His back hurt, probably from the landing, but still worked, and he was able to rise with limited effort.

“Good, the doctor was able to treat your wounds successfully.” The goblin smiled. “That will be four silver.”

Bourbon internally sighed. They were those kinds of goblins. He reached into his money pouch and found four silver coins and placed them on his bedside table. She smiled and the money vanished instantly into her pouch. The other goblin gave him a long stare before leaving the room.

Fifth Era had revised the goblin race somewhat. While there were still evil little gobbos all over the world, most of the civilized ones tended to be entirely tolerable. Bourbon’s knee-jerk racism didn’t even apply toward the civilized ones, they were just out to make some coin.

“Where’s my friend?” he asked.

“Which one?” she asked. “We have two other non-gobbos here presently.”

“The elf,” said Bourbon. “I assume he still has all his stuff.”

She stuck out her hand, and he dropped two copper pieces onto it. She leveled a stern look at him, and he fished out a third.

“He’s still unconscious down the hall. The doctor was letting him sleep off his injuries after the initial treatments were performed,” she said. “And of course, here at Big Richard’s medical center, we pride ourselves on our hard work.”

That’s going to be expensive. Bourbon poured himself out of the bed, and started in the direction she’d specified. They were in a goblin warren, and they tended to be meticulously clean or downright filthy. This one was one of the clean ones—you could have eaten off the floor.

The tunnel wasn’t straight, a fact designed to aggravate dwarves, but instead it curved out slightly. Typical goblin structures were built in a circular fashion with a single unbroken hallway running down the entire complex that ran back into itself. There would be branches from the hallway, spokes to the wheel, but if you were staying on the same ring, you didn’t need to ever use them.

Melf was three doors down, with a goblin guarding it. The orderly looked like a tough customer and examined Bourbon as he approached. If he saw this in a human building, or dwarven for that matter, he’d have been suspicious. From a goblin, he knew what was expected.

“How much?” asked Bourbon.

“To see him?” asked the orderly.

“To spring him,” replied Bourbon, as two more orderlies stepped out of the office across the hall.

“One gold, three silver,” replied the large goblin. He was only a few inches shorter than Bourbon and nearly as broad. One on one, the dwarf figured he could take him. Except you never got to fight one on one in a goblin lair.
