SAMUEL TWIRLED THE noodles around in the spaghetti sauce and tried his best not to listen in on the call Jordan was having on her cell phone. Even though he could only hear half the conversation, it really wasn’t hard to get the gist of what was being said on the other end. If he hadn’t been able to hear the words, he certainly recognized the universal expression people wore when receiving bad news.

He’d planned a peaceful evening with a quiet meal and a home movie. For six long months he’d been working at wooing Jordan, and she was finally beginning to relax in his presence. Most of that time had been spent trying to convince her he only wanted to be her friend whilst desperately trying to get her to fall in love with him. It had taken some doing, but the last two months he’d sensed she was on the verge of letting her guard down.

Jordan stood in the doorway between the kitchen and living room for a long time after she’d ended the call.

“Is everything okay?”

Samuel thought for a moment she hadn’t heard him, but she finally slipped the her phone into the pocket of her jeans, walked back over to the table and sat down.

“Yep. Everything is just like it was before.”

Samuel may have been convinced had he not seen how close she was to tears. He reached across the table and took her hand. “You want to tell me about it? Maybe I can help.”

At that, she finally met his eyes, but then shook her head. “Thanks, but no one can help. Some things you just can’t fix, no matter how hard you try, and believe me, I’ve tried many times.”

He squeezed her hand. “Maybe you need another opinion on the matter. You know, a different outlook. I don’t mind helping, if you want to tell me what’s going on.”

Jordan studied their clasped hands for a while before looking up into his eyes again. She nodded, solemnly. “Maybe you’re right. I’ve tried and tried so many times. Maybe I should just give up trying to reach out to her. If she doesn’t want me in her life then maybe I should just take the hint.”

Samuel picked up his chair and moved it around the table so he could be closer, taking both her hands in his own this time. “Whose life are you trying to be in?”

A tear slid from the corner of her eye and down her cheek, but she sniffed and shook her head, as if that would be enough to stem the tide. “My mother’s.”

“Is that who you were talking to on the phone?”

She shook her head. “No. That was my aunt. She called me yesterday to let me know that mom was flying in for the weekend. She thought I might like to come over and see her while she was there, but Mom had her call me just now to tell me it would be better if I didn’t.”

“Why would she do something like that?”

Jordan didn’t answer for a long time.
