Stacie nodded.

Cheryl leaned in. “Tell me about your day.” She gave a conspirŹatorial wink. “I’m always looking for professions for my characŹters.”

Stacie turned her cup in a slow circle. “The senior editor, who also happens to be the owner, is certifiable.” She told Cheryl how Estelle Vargas deliberately concealed the fact that there were two locations for the Travis County Reporter and about the fifty-dollar bet she made and posted.

“She posted it on a bulletin board,” Cheryl said, her eyes round with surprise.

Stacie nodded. “I’m telling you, she’s a weird bird. I spent the rest of the morning filling out paperwork and meeting everyone. Then, after lunch, Vargas brings in a stack of copy and dumps it on my desk. For the rest of the day, I read and edited music reviews, articles on upcoming art and craft shows that seem to pop up in every little podunk town in South Texas, and lists of which bands are playing where. But the high point of my day was an in-depth report on Uncle Clem’s Brown Jug Band.”

Cheryl’s eyes sparkled with suppressed laughter. “I guess romance writers don’t look so bad anymore.”

Stacie tensed. She didn’t want things to get ugly between them again. Talking to Cheryl was enjoyable and surprisingly easy.

“I’m teasing you,” Cheryl assured her as she reached across the table and patted Stacie’s hand. “Try doing what I do. When I start feeling sorry for myself, I think about other jobs I could be doing.”

“What do you mean?” Stacie asked, frowning.

“Well, for example, I could be a garbage collector. Can you imagine having to ride around all day long hanging on to the back of a garbage truck? Or I could have been a CEO imprisoned in an office day in and day out.” She leaned forward. “I have the greatest job on earth.” She held up her hands to stop any protest from Stacie. “I know. I was complaining earlier about deadlines, but everyone has deadlines of some sort. I set my own hours. If I want to go outside, I grab my laptop or a pad and pencil and go sit under
