And then, all of us in that room had a long moment of silence. I think we were all a little shocked, all busy trying to process whatâd just happened. Iâve never seen anyone dressed down quite the way Tollendahl had just been. Because the big duke hadnât really been threatening so much as pointing out the truth of the matter. And all Tollendahlâs bluster, all his confidence in his abilities and in his power, went right out the window as soon as the duke was holding the count by the throat. The big guy and let loose and Tollendahl had no recourse but to just take it. To take everything the duke said. And those of us in that room could never really see Tollendahl the same. I mean, I understand I was generalizing a fair amount about the guards down below, thinking that theyâd probably had some sort of fear for the man, given he seemed more than happy to kill anyone at any time.
But then came this big dude who was not cowed in the slightest by Tollendahl. Or the sort of power Tollendahl possessed. And I had no doubt the Stranger could pull off what he said.
I had no doubt that, had the man wanted to throw down in the midst of this room full of 40-plus guards, he wouldâve come out victorious.
Now why he didnât just kill Tollendahl? I donât know.
Of course, I had to counter that with my own question: Why didnât I just kill Tollendahl? Iâd had the chance. Heâd been all alone in the room beneath me. I had a clear shot at backstabbing the hell out of a grade-A asshole. Hell, the guy was practically a super villain, just without the super part. He was actively engaged in the slave trade, seemed to get off on death and dismemberment, and the night we had first interacted, Iâd saved someone destined to be killed in his sex games. Why hadnât I just left a dagger in his back?
Some might say I wasnât just random killer, that I had a moral code requiring me to face off against armed opponents, but that wasnât really the case. I was opportunistic when required.
I think, if I was forced to be honest, it was because a man like Tollendahl had to have means of protecting himself that werenât obvious. He had to have all sorts of magical and/or arcane protections on his person. There was probably some charm on his necklace that would cause any backstab or to be electrocuted or turned into dust or filled with Jell-O or forced to spend an enchanted evening with Bill Cosby. It was probably good I didnât just try and sneak a dagger into the manâs fat back.
While Iâd been busy pontificating, the guards must have been ordered out of the room. Tollendahl was pacing back and forth.
I knew Tollendahl had to be planning something already â that was why he was pacing. Because for all the terrible in him, he was a man of action.
