“Is anyone in here? I heard the showers were still—Noah? Finn?”

I lunge for a towel while Noah turns the shower off before doing the same. We both hastily wrap ourselves up, though the towels do nothing to hide our erections.

Fortunately, mine is wilting quickly at the thunderous look on Gale’s face.

“What is the meaning of this?” he demands.

Great. So we’re going to have this conversation, are we?

“Well… um… I’m gay.”

“I know that! I don’t care that you’re gay, Finn. What I care about is why my two star centers are in the team showers with their tongues down each other’s throats! Do you even realize how unprofessional this is?”

Some of the knot in my chest dissolves. If this isn’t about homophobia, that makes it slightly easier to deal with, but it’ll still be tricky to navigate. Thankfully, Noah seems willing to do the talking on this one.

“You’re right, Gale. I guess we let our desires get away with us. We should never have done this at work. It won’t happen again.”

Gale raises an eyebrow. “Noah, this isn’t just about it happening at work; it’s about it happening at all.”

Well, that doesn’t sound good.

“What do you mean?” I can tell by Noah’s voice of determined calm that he’s unnerved but trying not to show it.

“You’re teammates! Noah, you’re the captain. You can’t be sleeping with one of your team members. It’s unprofessional and dangerous. It could affect your game play, and even if it doesn’t, I don’t want that kind of interpersonal drama going on in my team.”

“Well, it’s going on, and in case you haven’t noticed, my and Finn’s cooperation and gameplay has improved tenfold since it has been.”

“Be that as it may, this can’t continue. If you both want to remain on the team, then you’d better break off whatever it is you have going. You can be friends, but you can’t be anything more if you want to stay on the same team together.”

“But—”

“I’m sorry, Finn, but that’s my final word. Now get dressed and get out of here.”

Gale turns and leaves before we can protest further.

I’m left staring helplessly at Noah. “What are we going to do?”

Noah grimaces. “Well, there aren’t many options, unfortunately. We could keep doing this in private or we could stop. That’s it, really, unless you think Gale will change his mind, which I doubt he will. I’ve known him a long time and once he makes up his mind on something, he’s not going to change it unless you make a really compelling argument.
