A Word to the Instructor

Written in 1954, this was originally intended as the introductory piece for the anthology Twelve Poets, edited by Glenn Leggett. The publishers of the anthology, however, decided against including it; therefore, the piece was published first in On the Poet and His Craft.

I SHOULD LIKE TO GIVE, humbly and simply, some general advice on the teaching of poetry, based on my own mistakes and shortcomings. I assume a young instructor, in a place strange to him, faced with a mixed section of students, frightened as I am still frightened after thirty-five years’ experience, before a first class.
