43 FITTING IN

They were the only ones at the shooting range, Imogene was glad to see. She and Bob had driven there directly from the explosives training area. There wouldn’t be an audience to view her attempts at hitting the bulls-eye.

“I’ve shot a bb gun a few times,” she told Bob, “but I’m a rookie when it comes to real guns.”

“That’s all right. I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it real quick. You did just fine with the grenades.”

Two hours later Imogene rested her head on the rifle. It wasn’t that her aim was bad; in fact, with practice she knew she could develop into a sharpshooter. The thing was, she didn’t like shooting. The rifle felt heavy and clunky. She worried that a budding aversion to guns could get her dropped from the team. It was a possibility she had not considered. Wiping her sweaty palms on her pants, Imogene realized how upset she was at the possibility of not being part of Gwen’s operation to nab Natasha.

“Is there any hope for me, Bob?” she asked after she stowed the rifle in the back of the Jeep and climbed into the passenger seat. “I’m afraid I don’t care for guns.”

Bob sat in the driver’s seat of the Jeep, lost in thought. “I saw a lot of bad stuff in the war,” he said after a minute. There’s not much good I can say about guns and killing.” He patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry overmuch about it, Imogene. You’re a nice kid, and a healthy respect for safety goes a long way. I think we’ll get you ready for the job you need to do.”

Bob’s insight was comforting and made her feel like she might pass the training course. It emboldened her to ask, “So, what about this rocket launch on the schedule for later today?”

“Oh, that was a joke,” he said with a laugh as he cranked the engine. “You’re done with me now. I’m supposed to turn you over to Pierce. Covert operations training is on the schedule for tomorrow.”

“Thanks for everything, Bob,” Imogene said after dinner. “I’m a lucky girl to have an explosives expert like you teach me.”

“It was my pleasure. Good luck with Pierce.” He waved as he strode off.
