Chapter Eighteen

Jacin

"Lumi!" I bark at her as Alysium crumples to the snow and the guard points his sword at her chest, bringing back memories of the last sword that pierced her heart. "Stop this."

"No you stop Jacin," she retorted, "just stop fighting and come with me." I raised one eyebrow at her, but refused to answer, "Fine stab her," she told the guard.

"Okay, okay." I screamed as the image of the Demoran's blade going through Ally's chest from behind flashed in my mind. "I surrender. Just don't hurt her," I cautioned, making the guard's arm pause.

"Good," she answered, motioning for the guard to step back as Loriel growled. "You've not changed Jacin, she must be Alysium. You only ever surrendered for her." Lumi spoke sadly before turning her back on us all, and walking back towards the palace.

Sighing at her veiled meaning I slowly walked over to Ally, picking her gently from the snow. I cradled her against my chest before following Lumi. I'd always do what it takes to keep her safe, I thought silently to myself as Loriel and Ashlilou silently brought up the rear.

"What about those guys?" I heard Ashlilou ask, as we left the field behind.

"People will be sent to collect them," I answered, suddenly feeling exhausted as I prepared myself to field Agenian’s political sphere. “In here we speak to no one of our business, even in our own rooms. The walls will have eyes and ears,” I explain quietly, trying to prepare them both for their stay in a royal palace.

Each court operates differently but luckily the Winter Court was the most like Queen Serralyn’s own Court. However, that could have all changed. I was just relieved it seemed that Lumi’s mother still held this court.

“Sounds fun,” Loriel stated quietly, but I saw his eyes flash regretfully to Ally in my arms.

“Court can be fun, however it is also filled with liars, snakes and power hungry Fae that will do just about anything and everything to rise to the top. It’s like the tide, unpredictable and violent but it can also be calm and still.”

“So who are we here then?” Ashlilou questioned, as we joined Lumi, who’d paused with a smaller Fae next to a nondescript wooden door.

“No, they come with us Faye,” I overheard Lumi tell the familiar older woman, who tossed her brown hair over her shoulder, before levelling us with a stern look that made my heart hurt. Faye Rosewink, when angry, was a force to be reckoned with. She’d been Lumi’s nanny-slash-bodyguard since Lumi had been born, just as Lilah had been to Alysium. And right now she was royally pissed off! Meeting her oceanic blue eyes, I bowed my head in respect, trying to get back on her good side.

“They touch nothing and speak to no one!” she demanded of Lumi, but I think we all knew her words were for us. Then she picked up her skirts, opened the door with a huge ring of keys, then ushered each of us inside a pitch black tunnel.
