MEIRA

Cushions and throw blankets were strewn about the dryer heights of the western beach amid the fading light of day. We would sail at dawn, but for now…we would drink. Dessert was also served, even if we were gorged from Mother’s generous feast in the courtyard following the council. Guests from both Ipona and Esprae mingled with our own people, laughter and boisterous shouts rising above their endless chatter and toasts.

I should be training.

But this unity was our best shot to defeat Alaric. Both Rufus and Abriel had sent word to their fleets to be ready to sail. On another island in Thessadosia, Leolani’s navy was also making haste to prepare. The rest of us would sail out from Honae to meet up with them in the northern borders of the Southern Kingdoms’ waters, and over a thousand ships in total would engage with Alaric’s navy. The battles were mere weeks away, and so long as our allies and own navy followed the strategy laid out by the kings—so long as they all fought and faced certain death to create even just one opening for us—my ship’s fight lay solely with the drakon.

My heart was heavy even as I enjoyed the company and lighthearted atmosphere down at the beach. If asked, I was certain that many others felt this way, but we were fae, immortal until killed. And we didn’t sulk before a battle, nor cower at the possibility of death.

We reveled.

Three bonfires were built up so high that their flames towered over our heads. They were made from great dried trunks stacked in cones that several males spent the latter part of the afternoon transporting.

I could have walked inside one of the fire teepees and remained standing with my arms twirling about. Not that I would, of course. Given enough alcohol and a dare, any one of these fae would be foolish enough to try it, though. Thinking of the flames, my gaze caught on a male still dressed in his fighting leathers mingling on the outskirts of another group about twenty paces away.

He just might be able to walk through one of these blazing fires and not have a single hair singed.

Rina and Casimir approached, breaking me out of my thoughts. Although there was still something off about them, they were gravitating together. My guess was that Casimir was wary of so many virile warriors visiting Honae, of which I’d seen a few looking my sister’s way, but I was still dying to know why they’d been avoiding each other.

Rina appeared both uncomfortable and content in the shadow-walker’s presence—he was someone familiar among all the strangers visiting. Some of whom had doubted her allegiance.

I looked around to confirm my suspicion. Avery wasn’t here for her to cling to. My sister took a seat, poised but most definitely not relaxed. We were dressed in the same clothes as earlier, having gone from the war council to the feast, and once the sweets and fruit had been brought, the guests had raided the cellars and en masse took off running to the beach.
