For years, WRRF operators have been trained to rely on their senses when evaluating the condition of the facility operations. Of the five senses, sight and smell are used the most, with hearing a distant third. Operators look for deviations from normal conditions by viewing wastewater for color variations, flow velocity, accumulation of surface material (scum, flotables, sludge, etc.), excess bubbling on a quiescent or aerated surface, foam accumulation on aeration tanks, and other abnormalities. The odor released at certain facility locations also reveals variations from the standard operating procedure that a trained operator will smell while doing rounds. Placing covers on these once open channels, tanks, wet wells, and so on substantially restricts the operator from evaluating the operating condition of the facility.
