CHAPTER 7
Nikki was waiting at the bus stop, just like normal. Normal. Normal. Normal. I said the word in my head, hoping if I repeated it enough it would make it true. It's a normal day. Everything is normal. I am normal.
"Oh, you poor thing!" Nikki gasped when she saw me.
"What?" I put my hand on my face. I thought Mom had fixed my makeup disaster.
"You look so ⦠nervous!" Nikki replied. "Calm down! The audition is no big deal. It'll be over before you know it."
I forced a smile. Right. It was normal to be nervous. "Sorry, I-I'm just worried that I'll blow this audition. For you, I mean," I stammered.
"Don't worry!" Nikki grabbed my arm and took me up the bus steps. "We're going to knock 'em dead."
I nodded. But for some reason that didn't make me feel any better.
When we got school, Nikki skipped down the bus steps. She was clearly very excited for auditions.
"Hurry up," she called over her shoulder.
I was moving slowly, like a girl who hadn't slept all night and had only eaten a single slab of beef in five days. By the time I got to my locker, Nikki was slamming hers shut.
"Pick it up, Tulah! History will be history by the time we get there!"
I slid into my seat just as the bell rang. Ms. Perez was a stickler for tardiness, and always started right on time.
"Can someone get the lights?" Ms. Perez asked. She had her PowerPoint presentation all set up. She hit her clicker and the first slide appeared on screen.
