Chapter 10

Bolan watched the woman drive with near total concentration on the road ahead. She was handsome and strong-jawed, with dark brown eyes, and her chestnut hair was pulled back in a ponytail. She seemed straightforward and no-nonsense, and hadn’t even blinked when he’d told here there were armed killers loose in the park. Which means she suspects something about them, as well, he thought.

“Do you know anything about the people I encountered?”

She glanced at him for a moment before returning her attention to the road. “Your story—while sounding a bit extreme—kind of fits in with another incident at that campsite that happened yesterday. A group of six campers at the site went missing. When I checked it out, I found a 9 mm casing near a fairly fresh fire pit, along with some stained rocks in the circle. I thought the stains might be blood.”

“You report it?”

Again that sidelong glance. “Of course, but I didn’t have a survivor of an attempted murder to back me up. I expect my boss will listen a bit more closely now.”

“Do you have a smartphone?”

“Yeah, but the reception is terrible out here. That’s why it’ll be best to use the phone at the lodge.”

“May I borrow it anyway? I have to get in touch with people about this right away.”

She handed her phone over with a shrug. “You can try, but you’re probably not going to get through.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Bolan activated the web browser and entered a particular web address that linked him to a satellite that would connect him with Stony Man Farm.

“Yes?” a gruff voice on the other end said. Bolan recognized the voice of Aaron “the Bear” Kurtzman, Stony Man’s senior computer expert.

Bolan looked over at the park ranger. “I’m on an unsecure line,” he said.

“Initiating security protocols.” Bolan heard a slight tone on the line, and knew that the conversation was currently being encrypted at both ends. “I thought you were on vacation?” the wheelchair-bound computer genius asked.

“Yeah, so did I.” Bolan quickly filled in Kurtzman on what had happened to him earlier that evening. “I need you to run a search on militia groups in the western U.S. that may have the funding and resources to field a platoon-sized group of men, armed with automatic weapons and the latest comm equipment, that kind of thing.”

“I’m on it.” He heard clicking in the background as Kurtzman entered his search parameters into the Stony Man computers. “What about you? Need back up? Calvin and Gary just got back from their latest field work. I’ll see if they’re available.” He referred to Calvin James and Gary Manning, members of Phoenix Force.

“It’d be a good idea to get them on the first flight out here, although that’s going to take a while, even flying into Jackson Hole. We’re running out of time. I may have to go in alone.”

“Well, let me see what I can do for them on the Stony Man Express.
