Chapter 13
"I'm afraid I must insist," Aunt Doris said and literally put her foot down firmly at this statement.
Malcolm stopped eating the egg white omelet that she had fixed for him. A bowl of fruit sat nearby. All things she prepared specially for him. Things she didn't have to do.
"Why is this important to you?" he asked.
She laughed. "It's not important to me. It's important to you. I've let this go long enough but no more."
Malcolm closed his eyes and opened them again to look at the smiling woman's face. He thought of all the extra things she did for him. A good woman doing her best, much like his mother. Such a little thing to make her happy. "Okay."
"Good," she said rising with a smile she could barely suppress. "We leave in a half-hour. Dress nicely."
Malcolm finished his breakfast and put the dishes in the washer before going up to his room. His closet contained several suits still in their dry cleaner bags. He picked out a blue pinstripe wool suit and added a light blue starched shirt and a gold patterned tie. Leather wingtips and a long trench coat completed the outfit.
"Ohhhhh, look at you, so handsome," she said as he came down the stairs.
"You should see me in drag," he said without thinking.
Aunt Doris looked shocked and then burst out laughing. "Malcolm, you are such a funny boy. Why don't you have a girl?"
"Haven't found one yet that deserves me."
She pointed a finger at him. "It's important not to settle but be sure your standards aren't too high. You'll miss something special if you do that."
"Yes, ma'am."
She let him drive her in his pickup truck to the First Methodist Church of Manchester. It was the same church she had been married in. The same church she had been baptized in as a wide-eyed ten-year-old girl and the same church she said her funeral would be conducted in.
"It's good to have that level of consistency," he said.
"God is consistent," she answered. "Just not always understandable for us mortals."
They found the parking lot rather full which Doris said was to be expected. Many only came to church on the holidays seeking the nostalgia of when they attended here as children. Malcolm dropped her off at the door so she wouldn't have to walk as far and then parked along the street. Walking back to the church he thought he saw a familiar tall blond figure enter the front of the church.
He found Doris in what he suspected was her regular seat near the front where she had saved a spot for him. The choir was making their way into pews behind the pulpit and Malcolm spotted Francine the doma matrix. "Who is that woman?" he asked.
Doris shook her head. "I said get a girl and you pick the only one out there you haven't got a shot at. Francine Mussman is a waste of your time."
The name Mussman rang bells in his mind, but he couldn't figure out why. "She's married?"
"Hardly," Doris snorted.
