Chapter Nineteen

Bree

It was hard to get a good start when there was no wall to launch myself off of, but I tried my best.

Back in high school, I had done a mean backstroke, but I wasn’t going to swim that way while naked. So, I chose my second-best stroke, which was freestyle. I kept my head down and breathed on the opposite side of Zack, so his position wouldn’t get in my head.

I wasn’t as fast as I had been more than a decade ago, and I was out of breath when I finished, but I was feeling pretty good as I planted my feet on the bottom.

Until I saw that Zack was already standing there.

What? No. No, no, no.

“No way you beat me.”

He used both hands to slick his hair off his face. “It was close, but I did beat you.”

“But, but, but…I was on the high school swim team.”

He grinned. “And I was a lifeguard.”

“Dammit, I should have asked you if you had any experience.” I had gotten too arrogant. I hadn’t even considered that my opponent would have skills too. Lesson learned.

“I guess I should have asked you the same thing.”

“Not that it mattered. You won anyway,” I muttered.

“Sorry.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “No, you’re not.”

“You’re right. I’m not.” He lifted his hands out of the water and rubbed them together. “So, are you ready to hear what I want as my prize?”

“Definitely not. But I don’t have a choice, do I?”

“Nope,” he said, emphasizing the P.

I sighed. “Okay. We might as well get it over with.” I made a come-here motion. “Spit it out.”

“Well, originally, I was going to say that I get to take the trophy home we won this afternoon.”

I smiled. That wasn’t so bad. I would give him the trophy. It was easier than what I had asked for.

“But…”

“But what?”

“But then you got too cocky, didn’t want to hear what I had to say, so I changed my mind at the last minute.”

“Or you changed your mind after you won,” I said suspiciously.

He lifted a shoulder. “I guess you’ll never know.”

I gritted my teeth. He was right. And now, I was probably going to have to do something I really didn’t want to do.

“Are you going to punish me now?” I asked. “Are you going to make me go streaking or make me walk back to the cabin, naked?”

“Nothing like that.”

That was a relief, but he hadn’t said he wasn’t going to penalize me.

“Tell me.”

He stepped closer to me until only half a foot separated us. “You have to kiss me like you did this afternoon.”

My first thought came out. “That’s not a—” I stopped myself from saying punishment out loud. I quickly shook my head back and forth. I didn’t want him to know that I wanted to kiss him again.

But he seemed to take it a different way.

Disappointment filled his eyes as he took a step back. “You’re right. I should not coerce you into kissing me again. That’s not honoring your consent, and I apologize.
