I. GRAIN-PETITIONING FESTIVAL
(Tosi-gohi no maturi)
Hear me, all of you assembled kamu-nusi 26 and hafuri 26. Thus I speak.
The kamu-nusi 26 and hafuri 26 together respond: âôô.â
The same below whenever âThus I speakâ occurs.
I humbly speak before you,
The Sovereign Deities28 whose praises are fulfilled24 as Heavenly Shrines and Earthly Shrines12
By the command of the Sovereign Ancestral Gods and Goddesses27 Who divinely remain in the High Heavenly Plain15:
This year, in the second month,
Just as grain cultivation is about to begin,
I present the noble offerings of the Sovereign Grandchild29
And, as the morning sun rises in effulgent glory,
Fulfill your praises24. Thus I speak.
I humbly speak before you,
The Sovereign Deities of the Grain 8:
The latter grain to be vouchsafed by you [to the Sovereign Grandchild29],
The latter grain to be harvested
With foam dripping from the elbows,
To be pulled hither
With mud adhering to both thighsâ
If this grain be vouchsafed by you
In ears many hands long,
In luxuriant ears;
Then the first fruits will be presented
In a thousand stalks, eight hundred stalks;
Raising high the soaring necks
Of the countless wine vessels, filled to the brim;
Both in liquor and in stalks I will fulfill your praises24.
From that which grows in the vast fields and plainsâ
The sweet herbs and the bitter herbsâ
To that which lives in the blue oceanâ
The wide-finned and the narrow-finned fishes,
The sea-weeds of the deep and the sea-weeds of the shoreâ
As well as garments
Of colored cloth, radiant cloth,
Plain cloth, and coarse clothâ
In these I will fulfill your praises24.
Before the Sovereign Deities of the Grain8
I will provide a white horse, a white boar, a white cock,
And various types of offerings,
And will present the noble offerings of the Sovereign Grandchild29
And fulfill your praises21. Thus I speak.
I humbly speak before the Sovereign Deities 28
Whose praises are fulfilled24 by the High Priestess25:
I speak your names:
Kami-musu-bi, Taka-mi-musu-bi, Iku-musu-bi, Taru-musu-bi, Tama-tume-musu-bi,
Oho-miya-no-me, Oho-mi-ke-tu-kami, Koto-siro-nusi,
And fulfill your praises24
Because you bless the reign of the Sovereign Grandchild29
As a long reign, eternal and unmoving,
And prosper it as an abundant reign.
Therefore as our Sovereign Ancestral Gods and Goddesses24,
To you I present the noble offerings of the Sovereign Grandchild29
And fulfill your praises24. Thus I speak.
I humbly speak before the Sovereign Deities28
Whose praises are fulfilled by the priestesses of Wigasuri25:
I speak your names:
Iku-wi, Saku-wi, Tu-naga-wi,
Asuha, Hahiki,
And fulfill your praises24
Because in the bed-rock below, where you hold sway, the palace posts are firmly planted,
And the cross-beams of the roof soar high towards the High Heavenly Plain15,
And the noble palace of the Sovereign Grandchild29 is constructed,
Where, as a heavenly shelter, as a sun-shelter 11, he dwells hidden,
And tranquilly rules the lands of the four quarters as a peaceful land.
Therefore I present the noble offerings of the Sovereign Grandchild29
And fulfill your praises24. Thus I speak.
I humbly speak before the Sovereign Deities28
Whose praises are fulfilled by the priestesses of the Gates25:
I speak your names:
Kusi-iha-mato-no-mikoto,
Toyo-iha-mato-no-mikoto,
And fulfill your praises24
Because you dwell massively imbedded like sacred massed rocks
In the gates of the four quarters;
You open the gates in the morning
And close the gates in the
