Chapter 9

As it was nearly dinner time, Rhys stripped out of his shredded clothes and took a quick shower. He was heading down to the dining hall when he was met by Madam Nocturna, who must have been lying in wait for him. He sighed in exasperation, a little too loudly.

“Now was that really necessary?” the Principal asked mildly.

“I’m sorry … ma’am … but there are certain aspects about my past that I wanted to reveal in my own good time, and I certainly didn’t appreciate the way Mr Coleman weaselled the information out of me!”

“All he had to do to work out what you were was simply look at you, Rhys!” Madam Nocturna reprimanded as she took him by an arm and briskly guided him into her office. The big padded door closed behind him with a muffled thump, and suddenly Rhys felt cut off from reality, like he’d just entered another dimension. The head mistress’ office was just as gloomy as Abbacus’, but here the shadows actually seemed to move. He watched one crawl across the ceiling and gulped.

“Please, take a seat.” She gestured towards a comfy-looking chair on the other side of her enormous desk. A large, old-fashioned computer with a glass-thin screen hummed softly on her desk. Cables trailed down a hole from which the occasional puff of steam emerged. Rhys wondered idly what powered this school. Was it connected to the local grid or did it possess its own energy source? So much equipment and strange, Magick technology – he suspected the latter.

“Rhys, I know you feel a little in over your head, but believe me – we all feel like that at the moment. Necronis is threatening to invade and we need all the help we can get.”

Rhys nodded, remembering thinking the exact-same thing.

“That means we need to consolidate all available resources. I have already sent a message to the local priest, Father Lost, and his assistant the Jesuit monk Marco.”

Rhys raised his eyebrows. “A priest and a monk? How can they possibly help?”

“These aren’t ordinary holy men, Rhys. The priest is very powerful and Marco has resources from the Magick Earth.”

“Wait – what? Magick Earth?” Rhys gasped.

“Oh dear – you haven’t heard of that either, have you?”

“No!” Rhys shouted and clapped a hand over his mouth. “Sorry ma’am – didn’t mean to be so loud.”

“Basically, it’s a parallel realm of Magick. It’s where the language of Magick comes from. It exists on the other side of an endless barrier known as the Great Cosmic Mirror. I could explain more but I don’t have the time right now. Now I have also sent a call to the werewolf shaman Star Fang, who lives on the Astral Plane. All three of these individuals are coming tomorrow afternoon for a meeting, and we will be discussing what abilities we have that will help us to stop Necronis.”

“Ah,” said Rhys. “Alright.”
