Chapter 17
An hour later, a loud bang against the door interrupted their cuddle session, and Adam tossed his stuff onto the spare bed. He gave Christian a quick kiss before he raced for the door.
âWho is it?â he asked as he looked through the peephole.
âWho do you think?â
Adam detached the chain and opened the door. Pearson danced impatiently. His hands gripped the handles of a white banker box with writing along the side.
Anderson, S.
95-190
Pearson hurried inside. âWoof, itâs cold out there.â
âWell, well. Look at you, coming through like I had faith you would,â Christian said.
Adam plopped back on the bed next to him.
âIt was sent over to cold-case storage six years ago. And after sifting through aisles of dusty boxes, I found it. Everything you want to know about your motherâs case is all in here.â
Pearson dropped the box on the round table and swept his fingers through his hair to loosen the balls of ice, which clung to his spiky hair.
âSince weâre all in for a long night of video enhancing and reading, can I make a dinner suggestion?â Pearson asked.
âYou know the area better than we do,â Adam said.
âThereâs this amazing Chinese place that does takeout. I mean, if your both hungry, I could place a call.â
Adam and Christian swapped looks, and in unison, they responded with a simple, âYes.â
Pearson smiled, fetched the flyer from his jacket pocket, and tossed it onto the bed. âYou guys take a look while I catch you up on how much of a train wreck the interviews were.â
âAh, right. You learn anything new?â
âTo answer your question, Lee White drives a rust-bucket Chevy S-10, and Charles drives an El Camino.â
âDamn.â
Pearson rubbed the base of his neck. âNot the answer you wanted, huh?â
âI so hoped youâd say Chevy Silverado.â
âAh. So, thatâs what you found. Do tell.â
Adam fiddled with his watchband. âBetween 7:30 and 8:30, a Chevy Silverado passed on the main road nine times.â
âYou sure it was the same car?â
âCompletely sure. The passenger-side mirror was missing. I canât imagine there are many of those in the area.â
Pearson focused his gaze on the two. âThatâs a damn good find. Do you have access to SGI?â
A broad grin appeared across Adamâs face. âOf course. I have access to anything we need to know. But before we start, there is one last thing.â
âYeah?â
âIâve asked Christian to focus on the current case.â
Pearson shifted his focus between the two. âArenât we all working the current case?â
âThat was the plan, but Christian has this vibe his motherâs case is tied into this one. Iâve agreed to sift through her files in case it turns out heâs right.â
Christian chimed in. âMy contribution would be influenced, not to mention a bit emotional.â
âTotally. Youâre too close to that case, and no offense, but chances are good if you found something you didnât like, you might sweep it under the rug. You made the right call asking Adam to look into the possible connection.â
Adam patted Pearson on the shoulder. âExactly. So, if you want to help Christian, Iâll get to reading.
