Chapter Eight
Guilt set in for Syd when Mercedes stumbled into the kitchen the next morning, her face and arms fire red, evidence of a sleepless night in the prominent dark rings under her eyes. She wore loose-fitting blue pajama bottoms and a gray T-shirt three sizes too big. Even in her frumpy attire, she looked good enough to eat, literally.
Watching her walk like a zombie across the linoleum, Syd felt like a total sap for taking her shirt back when she knew it was the only protection Mercedes had against the sun. She also knew her quick, angered decision didn't have anything to do with the ice cubes, or even the worms. It had everything to do with years long past them now, a hurt she'd sheltered for far too long. It was time to get over it. Certainly Mercedes had gone on with her life like their summer fling had never happened.
Syd had always thought herself above cruelty, and she was. But not with Mercedes, if yesterday's behavior was any indication. Mercedes brought out the worst in her, made her act like someone she wasn't. Guilt rubbed like salt against her raw conscience. What if she hadn't gone back to find Mercedes? Anything could have happened. Mercedes could have fallen deeper down that steep, rocky gulch. She could have spent the night there with broken bones.
"Hope you slept like a baby." Mercedes poured her coffee and dropped into a chair with a groan, not daring to put her back against the vinyl. Her glaring eyes looked up at Syd. "Thanks to you, I got to toss and turn all night with my flesh on fire."
"If you weren't so pigheaded, your skin wouldn't be fried." Syd dropped into the chair across the table from Mercedes as Miller strolled into the room.
"That's a nasty burn you got there." A smile dimpled the corner of his mouth as he regarded his daughter. "Forget to take a shirt yesterday?" He poured a cup of coffee and sat down at the head of the table with his morning paper.
Darlene bustled into the room already dressed for riding. Her eyes widened as she caught sight of Mercedes. "Holy cow. Have you totally forgotten all about ranch life?" She poked Mercedes's shoulder as she walked by.
"Ouch! What the hell did you do that for?" Mercedes glared at her.
"You should have worn a shirt."
