21 She’s Waiting

I’m stuck on the highway, Alex looking at his watch thinking, I’m running out of time. Mr. Danielson had been so kind and let him borrow Old Betsy for the wedding. Even if the 1927 Chevrolet Landau four door Sedan was stretching out on the years, she was still putt-puttin’ in style. But you couldn’t say the same about the traffic. Alex stuck his head out of the side window… and nothing’s moving, oh no, what’s causing this line? He leaned over to the mirror—checking his tie. I know she is ready, he nodded to himself. Alex put his hands behind his head and stretched his back. He closed his eyes—his thoughts traveled on, she’s got her white dress on by now no doubt. Oooh, I’d like to tell her—it won’t be too long—she’s waiting…!

Mr. Fate, Tamlyn’s dad, was probably standing outside on the church steps staring at his pocket watch. Alex smiled… bet you he was tapping on the watch with his finger—to be certain it was running right. An old habit of his. Alex suddenly realized that except for the watch tapping he knew nothing about Mr. Fate. Though Alex had helped him out of the river that one time My Bunch tumbled down from the sky, he didn’t know diddely squat about Tamlyn’s dad. When Alex had been around on the airfield, helping Tamlyn with the planes and such, her dad would be standing over by the hangar observing them—tapping on his pocket watch. Of course when it came to technical matters they had spoken often together. Alex had impressed Mr. Fate with his detailed knowledge of airplanes and engines. But other than that… nothing much had ever been said. Charlie and Aunt Djurina were the only two with whom he had conversed deeply. Now, Mor Ingrid had given her son many words of wisdom for him to carry further on his life’s journey. And Pop always spoke of his disagreements with President Roosevelt’s handling of the war. But that was about it.

Alex stepped out of his vehicle to survey the situation. He felt like crying out to the traffic: She’s waiting! Not knowing where I am! Can someone please tell her… I’m on my way? Well, that would be lying… because he certainly was not on his way to anywhere, still: She’s waiting!

When he finally got going, he realized he was cooked fish. Over thirty minutes late, at least. Oh, this was not his day. Hopefully, Tamlyn wasn’t going to lose her mind over his not being there… oh, there was the church… hallelujah!
