Later in the night, I’m the first one to hear the hammering of the front door being broken at the knob. I shoot up like a firecracker in the bed. At some point in the night, we moved from the couch to the bedroom where we had more room to get comfortable and spread out. (Even though we ended up spooning right beside each other anyway).

I’m gasping for air, soaked by a cold and nervous sweat. I blink and try to gauge my surroundings. I am still lost in that transition phase of being stuck in between consciousness and unconsciousness. I’m swirling in a depth of confusion.

I glanced to my right. Eva is sleeping soundly beside me. The commotion isn’t loud enough to rouse her from slumber, but deep in my heart, I know it’s Andy breaking into my house.

Who else would it be? He’s finally here to seek his revenge. I’m afraid that this time, he’s not going to stop until I’m dead. My gut twists with angst and I’m sabotaged by instant nausea and paralyzing fear.

“Eva?” I hiss into the night, nudging her saliently to rouse her quickly from slumber. “Eva…wake up.”

My heart pounds so violently that I feel like I’m going to pass out.

Eva smacks her lips and rubs her eyes, propping herself up on her elbow. She is delirious and locked in a groggy fog. She stares at me expectantly, still doldrum with sleep.

“What’s wrong?” She croaks, her voice raspy as she struggles to wake herself up in the dark of night and the pitch black.

“He’s here,” I warn.

“Who?” She shakes her head, frowning, failing to comprehend what I’m trying to explain to her.

“Andy,” I whisper. “He’s breaking in right now.” Panic immobilizes me as we hear a terrifying boom and then the sound of my front door thundering to the floor.

Now Eva is wide awake. She leaps from the bed stark naked, and hastily slings her shirt over her head. She climbs back into her pants that she left on the chair next to her nightstand.

Her eyes are as wild and wide as a deer trapped in headlights.

“What do we do?” I ask, trying to keep my voice low. I don’t want to give Andy any extra clues as to where we’re hiding out.

Eva glances around the rooms as if she’s trying to remember where she is and get the bearings of her surroundings. She licks her lips nervously and points to the closet. “Jump in there and hide behind the clothes. Do not come out—no matter what you hear going on outside of the closet.”

I shake my head stubbornly, glued to the bed. “I can’t leave you to deal with Andy all by yourself. He’s a monster. You don’t know what he’s capable of.”

Eva won’t take no for an answer. “It’s probable that he’s armed and dangerous. I can’t put you at that kind of risk—”

“I won’t cower in the corner,” I insist.

I’m not helpless, and I certainly don’t want Eva to think of me that way.
