Luke and Lorraine sat back to back, giving them a full three hundred and sixty degree view of the camp.

John snored softly in his sleep, occasionally grumbling about mosquitoes.

“What if the tikbalang does show up?” Luke asked over his shoulder.

“Then I hope you’re a good shot.”

He grinned. “No worries there. I was the second best in my class.”

“Second, huh? Maybe Mr. Salazar should have hired the best,” she teased.

Luke nodded in John’s direction. “He did.”

He felt her shift her weight behind him. “Can I ask you something?” she asked.

“Uh... sure. Go ahead.”

“Are you and your brother really soldiers?”

The question came as no big surprise. He knew it would come up eventually. “We used to be.”

“And why is that? I mean, the two of you aren’t old, and as far as I can tell, neither of you are injured.”

“We got sick of staying low and dodging enemy bullets. All that crouching wasn’t good for my back.”

“Do you always use humour to evade questions you don’t want to answer?”

“Not always. I prefer using smoke grenades and tear gas. Since I’m not packing any of those, I may have to resort to a knock-knock joke or two.”

She nudged him playfully with her elbow. “Come on. Be serious.”

He could tell she wouldn’t let it go. Damn, she was persistent. “The truth?”

“Yes. Please.”

After a moment’s hesitation, he sighed and told her about Sergeant Barker.
