Architecture and Housing Styles

While much of New Zealand’s architecture has been influenced by overseas trends, it also has many award-winning architects who developed something of a local style. (See for example John Scott, whose buildings uniquely combined Maori and contemporary design elements, or Chris Moller, the long-time presenter of New Zealand’s Grand Designs TV show and creator of the Click-Raft prefab building system.)

Today, most private dwellings are detached homes for one family, but multiunit homes and apartments are increasing, mainly due to lack of space. You can often tell when a New Zealand house was built by its style. In the early twentieth century, Kiwis tended to build single-story wooden villas and bungalows. After the Second World War, houses became more restrained and box-like. The 1970s saw Kiwis branch out with “colonial,” “ranch,” “Mediterranean,” and “contemporary” styles. But in the 1990s, standards dropped and new building materials were introduced. Subsequently, it emerged that many houses were not watertight and resulted in the great “leaky homes” crisis, which saw thousands of structures having to be repaired or rebuilt.
