Chapter Fifteen

With Alex and Takeshi gone, I sign on to my kitchen laptop.

Strange how a whole tribe’s potential future and well being fell upon the shoulders of the newest ‘recruit.’ I suppose I could have given up Miguel’s name as a possible lead. Had I done so, I suspect the full wrath of the tribe would have descended down upon my hardest working young deputy. I don’t have near enough evidence to sell him out like that... or to potentially cause him harm. After all, this investigation has gone way beyond civic duty. In the real world, no one cares one iota that Miguel (or someone) has stolen the vial. Ransacked the bar looking for it... maybe. Which implies that Ed hadn’t totally given away the hiding place to Miguel... perhaps just enough of a hint for my deputy to have a general idea where to look.

And why on earth would Miguel want such a poison?

The million dollar question, no doubt.

Before Alex left, we discussed the possibility that Koko had taught Miguel how to block his thoughts. I asked Alex how common the technique was, and he admitted most knew it, though few passed it on to humans. Koko, for whatever reason, might very well have passed it along. Which was a moot point, considering Alex and his fellow werewolves mostly lost the ability to read minds just before the full moon. Mostly is the key word here. Alex was willing to swing by the station tomorrow just in case something came to him.

My gut tells me Alex won’t find much—even if his mind reading abilities are on full power, which they aren’t. Somehow, some way, Koko and Miguel have conspired to hide the information about the theft—and the reason behind it, since I hadn’t picked up on anything yet. Then again, that doesn’t mean much.

Moving on...

Without direct access to Miguel’s mind (unless Alex found a way through tomorrow), I need to rely on tried and true investigation techniques. One of which is to follow the evidence. Granted, the security footage is a long shot. The gas station is a full block away from The Swinery. That said, the sidewalk in front of it isn’t heavily trafficked, especially at those hours.

Might get lucky.

As promised, the email is waiting there for me, via my department’s official account, which I have access to here at my home. This isn’t the White House or a matter of national security. I’m permitted to work from home. That said, the station’s tech guy did come out and add various firewalls and security to my computer. Should it get stolen, no one, but no one would have access to it. Being Chief of Police, that is probably best.

The gas station manager writes ‘Hope this helps’ in his email and includes a downloadable media file. Easy enough. I click on it and my media player opens right up. So far, so good. As requested, I have about eight hours of footage to review. All from the perspective of a camera set up in the alley, pointing toward First Street.
