Mara was just as we left it, a ruined mess with nothing, but crumbling wall segments and a few structures still standing. By now the smoke had died out, leaving behind a husk of what was once my home.

It wasn’t that seeing the town in ruins had been a surprise, I was already well aware of Mara’s fate after all. No, it was just painful to see it in such a state. For the longest time since my arrival in New Realm Online, Mara had been my home. It hadn’t been the friendliest place in the world by a long shot, but the people there were willing to give me a chance. Through hard work, dedication, and trying my best to be as helpful as possible, I had won the local townsfolk over.

And now the once quaint village was destroyed.

“By the gods,” Rhedar said breathlessly. “Mara truly was destroyed.”

“That’s right,” I said. “Not once have I lied to you thus far, Rhedar, and I have no intension of starting anytime soon. Not to you or anyone else.

The man nodded. “I see.”

I tore my gaze from the ruins of my former home and looked on ahead. I pointed to the distant north where the snowcapped mountains stood above the swamplands around Mara’s ruins. “See that mountain up there? It’s the Bastion mountains. That’s where Liberty is.”

“It seems an odd place to settle down a hidden village,” Rhedar commented. “The landmark is rather noticeable from here after all.”

“True,” I agreed. “But the lands between Mara and Liberty are often dangerous. No one ventures in that direction unless they’re looking for adventure or hidden riches.”

“Ah. Very well then, good sir,” Rhedar said. “And I trust your people will have no problem escorting us back once our trading is done?”

I nodded. “They would love the experience points and the break from helping to build up the city.”

“I believe you mentioned that before,” Rhedar said. “How big are you planning to make Liberty?” The man stroked his beard. “Knowing such details would greatly aid my people in understanding what level of trade to bring to your lands.”

“Big,” I said. “From what I have seen of cities in this world and the plans Dwayne has laid out, Liberty will easily become the biggest city in the land.”

“Larger than Vorpe to the east or Exidal to the west?” Rhedar asked, his jaw practically hitting the floor of the cart.

I nodded and pointed again to the mountain, this time to the very peaks. “The castle’s going to be right up there, too.”

If Rhedar’s jaw could punch through the floor of the cart it would have.

“I know, I know. That’s not exactly keeping things low key,” I said with a laugh. “But by the time that part of the construction is done I believe our people will be ready to defend our home against any hostile kingdoms that might show up at our doorstep but the mightiest player guilds as well.”

Rhedar picked his jaw up off the floor and straightened himself.
