Epilogue

One Month Later

Penny

Bruin’s all quiet again. We’re having a good night, a party at the clubhouse. I was worried about how the club would treat Bruin, and even me, after everything. But they’ve all been good to us. It’s almost like they completely forgot that I was once an Eater. I wish I could. I still have nightmares sometimes, but Bruin has helped chase them away.

I look at Bruin and wonder if that’s why he’s all stoic and withdrawn. Is something going on with the Eaters? I heard Rita and Lisa talking about how the Eaters were building their army of shifters, but we knew it would happen. They can’t lose their vice president and not do anything.

I reach for Bruin’s hand and he stiffens. I try to keep the smile on my face. We’re sitting with Ronan and Bree and Bree is telling us the story of how she saved Ronan a few months ago. Ronan just smiles at her, pulling her into his lap.

I look over at Bruin again, but he’s looking at his beer bottle, ignoring everything around us.

I lean toward him. “Hey, do you want to go home?” I ask him. We’ve been staying at his house instead of his room at the club, which I have to admit I’m glad about.

He shakes his head, so I lean closer to him. Usually, by this point he has his arms wrapped around me, or is pulling me into his lap. But not tonight. “What is it, Bruin? Talk to me.”

He finally looks at me and when I think he’s going to say something, he just looks away real quick.

Ronan must have witnessed it all, because he says real loud, “Fuck, Bruin, just do it. You’re freaking the girl out.”

Bree slaps him on the chest playfully and looks at me with a secret smile.

I turn to Bruin and he’s still not smiling. “What is it? What do you have to say to me?”

He takes a deep breath and stands up, pushing the chair back and then falls to one knee in front of me.

The room starts cackling and yoo hooing. But I tune it out. I tune everything out except for Bruin.

He pulls something out of his pocket of his club cut and grabs my hand. “Penny, I love you. And I want you to be my ol’ lady.”

I smile at him, not believing that this is what was bothering him. My big bad Bruin is nervous. I tip my head to the side. “I thought I already was.”

He smiles then, a smile that fills his whole face. “Yeah, honey, fuck yeah, you are. But I want to make it official. Will you marry me?”

I tackle him then, and we both fall to the floor as I’m kissing him and crying. I don’t even care that I’m in a room full of men, his brothers; I cling to him, straddling his legs as he kisses me breathless.

He pulls away and we’re both gasping for breath. “Yeah, Penny. I think I want to go home.
