CHAPTER 19

The pain in Nalia’s head is intense enough to keep her from opening her eyes, but at least she’s not vomiting anymore. This is so much worse than when Yulian rubbed his bonding scent on her. So, so, so much worse.

“Oh, my dear, sweet, human! I’ll get you to a healer. Please don’t die!” Eora keeps repeating those words over and over again as she carries Nalia. The agony in her head is too intense for Nalia to respond. All she can do is focus on breathing. Hopefully, the healers will be able to alleviate this pain, or at least knock her out.

“What are you doing?” an outraged voice asks and Nalia slits one eye open far enough to see several Talins wearing long green tunics with matching green pants. Then the light is too much, and she moans and shuts her eye again.

“She’s dying!” Eora announces with a panicked rattle to punctuate her declaration. It’s all too much noise, and Nalia finds her stomach heaving. There’s nothing left to vomit except bile, but her stomach doesn’t care. She heaves, and the action makes her head hurt so badly her vision whites out.

“Set her down here. Hurry!”

Soon she’s on a bed and Talin hands are pulling and ripping at the soiled omnie to get it off of her. She doesn’t fight them, but she mourns the loss of the beautiful garment as she hears it being torn apart, so they get it off her without making her move.

“Can you tell us where you're hurt?” one healer asks, her fingers gently feeling along Nalia’s abdomen.

“Head,” she croaks out.

She feels hands probe her head and a puzzle rumble sounds. “I don’t feel any bumps or soft spots that would indicate trauma. Has she been having dizzy spells? I don’t recognize her, so is she new to the station? Has she been registered somewhere else? I need her medical history.” All those questions are thrown at Eora, who tries to give half answers.

“Derani.” Nalia’s not sure if any of them hear her at first. She tries again. “Derani.” Then one of the green-clad healers leans in close.

“Derani?” she whisper, her voice gentle. “Is that your name? Can you say anything else, little one?”

“Captain Derani.” She’s proud to get those two words out, but it costs her. Pain slices through her skull.

“Captain Derani? Considering this human is unlikely to be a captain, I can only conclude that Captain Derani is a Talin important to her, perhaps even an owner?” The healer's voice is still soft, but her tone is aggressive. “I don’t believe you’re being honest with me, Eoranan.”

“I have been deceptive,” Eora admits. “But, do please save the human. She’s a perfect example of her species.”

“I will be discussing this with the Sub-Director,” the healer warns. “For now, take her hand and speak comforting words. She’s in distress and pain can cause further complications and issues above what’s causing the pain in the first place. Do not let her thrash about or hurt herself.
