A massive earthquake hit Syria and Lebanon in 1170, the effects of which would have been felt as far as Galilee. It is unclear precisely how much damage was dealt to the city by this event alone, because in the resulting chaos the armies of Saladin swept into the Holy Lands. They targeted Nazareth in particular; the population was taken prisoner, regardless of their faith, and any remaining religious structures were plundered. In December 1170, Pope Alexander III requested that Christian communities in France make donations that would be used to reconstruct the church buildings of Nazareth.[98] However, it unclear exactly what happened then. The records of a Greek pilgrim named Giovanni Focas, who traveled to Nazareth sometime between the late 1170s and mid-1180s, make reference to at least part of the new basilica having been constructed at that time, so presumably the devout communities of France had sent some form of aid.[99]
