Historical Results
While a member of the league from their 1925â1926 to 2015â2016 seasons, the Giants played 1,273 games and won approximately 53 percent of them. In addition, they won twenty-four division and eleven conference titles and also eight championships including four Super Bowls in thirty-one playoff appearances. Compared to fifteen other teams in the NFC as of their 2015 season, this New York-based club was third in number of wins and also total championships, and sixth in winning percentage, first in division and conference titles combined, and tied for first with the Cowboys in qualifying for thirty-one postseasons (Table A.5).
Among the conferenceâs ED clubs as of their 2014 season, the ninety-one-year-old Giants had the most wins, total titles and championships, but also a lower winning percentage and same number of playoff appearances as the Cowboys. Based on these results, this New York-based team has been a top-notch, superior, and successful franchise because of outstanding performances in its division and conference during various seasons and in postseason games against rivals. In short, Giants teams have been among the best overall of any in the league during the twentieth and early twenty-first century.
Compared to the performances of thirty-one other NFL teams as of the leagueâs 2015â2016 season, the Giants ranked third in total wins, eleventh in winning percentage, first in both number of division and conference titles, and third in total championships including four Super Bowl victories. These and other results prove that, except for some regular seasons in the late-1920s to early-1930s, early to mid-1950s, and mid-1960s to late-1970s, this New York team has frequently but not always been competitive while playing clubs in its conference and across the league (Table A.6).
Through the NFLâs 2015â2016 season, some coaches and several players had memorable years while being on the rosters of Giants teams. In number of wins, the former group includes Steve Owen with 155 victories, Tom Coughlin 104, and Bill Parcells 85. Alex Webster was NFC coach of the year in 1970, Parcells in 1986, and Dan Reeves in 1993 while Allie Sherman became AP coach of the year in 1961 and 1962, Parcells in 1986, Reeves in 1993, and Jim Fassel in 1997. With fewer than 10 wins, however, were coaches Bob Folwell, Joe Alexander, and Bill Arnsparger. As a group, these have been the best and worst coaches in the history of the Giants franchise.
Some of the clubâs players established individual career, single season, and single game records at their positions as of the leagueâs 2015 season. As examples of career records, Tiki Barber rushed for 10,449 yards, and Eli Manning passed for 35,345; Amani Toomer caught 668 passes for 9,497 yards; Frank Gifford scored 78 touchdowns and Pete Gogolak 646 points; and Michael Strahan recorded 141.5 sacks. During a single season, Y. A. Tittle passed for 36 touchdowns in 1963; Victor Cruz had 1,536 receiving yards in 2011; Don Chandler averaged 48.6 yards on his punts in 1959; and Joe Morris scored 21 touchdowns in 1985 and Jay Feely 148 points in 2005.
