The term “consul” was used because of Napoleon’s love of ancient history, in particular that of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and the mighty Roman Empire. In Rome, the term was used by the two most powerful magistrates in government, who were also the highest military figures, and they effectively ran the Roman Empire. The reason there were two consuls of equal authority was so that there would always be a balance in any decision, but the Senate had the power to appoint one as the sole Dictator in times of crisis.
