The next day I woke up and Oliver was gone.
I panickedâI checked under the crib, under the bed, in the closet. I wasnât a deep sleeper, so I should have heard him. Finally I rushed out of the nursery to see Bryce feeding him breakfast in the kitchen. Oliver squealed happily when he saw me, knocking a spoon of oatmeal away.
âThere you are,â I said with a deep sigh. âI thought I had lost you.â
âHeâs got a while before he learns to turn doorknobs and escape,â Bryce said. âYou were sleeping soundly so I didnât want to disturb you.â
âI can take over from here,â I said, reaching for the spoon. Bryce waggled a finger at me.
âNuh uh. Itâs your day off. Did you forget?â
I had forgotten. Time here didnât have the same weekly ebbs and flows as it did in the city. I didnât realize it was Sunday.
âI donât need a day off,â I said. âOllieâs not that difficult. And I owe you for letting me stay at the lake house during the pandemicâ¦â
âStop it,â Bryce replied firmly. âIâm the one who owes you. A day off is good for your mental health.â
âAre you sureâ¦â I began, but he cut me off.
âI took care of him, by myself, for the eleven months before you started nannying. I can handle one day.â
I put up my palms. âOkay, okay. Youâve convinced me.â
âToday is also pay day,â he added. âWe agreed youâd be paid weekly. I PayPalâd it over to you. Let me know if there are any issues.â
I ate breakfast while watching Bryce feed Oliver. The baby kept fighting his father and reaching for me, but Bryce had made a point about me not helping so I stayed back and let them battle it out. Based on the amount of food on Bryce, it looked like Oliver won.
âYouâre a gremlin,â Bryce told him. âSomeone fed you after midnight, didnât they?â
After breakfast I wasnât sure what to do with myself. I took a cup of coffee out onto the balcony and watched the sun rise over Lake Summerstone. The lake surface was as still as a mirror, reflecting the trees and hills on the far shore. The only disturbance was a straight line heading toward our lake house, with triangular wake spreading out behind it. A swimmer. I watched Liam reach the shore and dry off with a towel on the beach. He jogged up the steps, leaving wet footprints on the wood.
âDidnât get enough of a workout on the water?â I asked. âYou have to jog the last bit too?â
Liam grinned in passing. âIâve never seen a flight of stairs I didnât want to jog up.â
I did the New York Times Crossword Puzzle on my phone. The Saturday and Sunday puzzles were the toughest and I barely made any progress after ten minutes, so I backtracked to last Mondayâs puzzle and completed that instead. Then I did the Tuesday puzzle. I had spent most of the last year being a busy nanny for the Hendersons, and after getting fired I had spent every waking moment looking for another job.
