Hinton Hospital.

After breakfast, Jethro opened the sheriff’s office and took care of feeding Roger Placemore while Ardal drove Mama and Rowan to Hinton to the hospital.

Daddy was in recovery after the surgery to remove the bullet from his side but he wasn’t awake.

Ardal asked at the nurses’ station and was told the sheriff wouldn’t wake up until late afternoon.

“He’s not going to wake up until this afternoon, Mama. Want to go home and come back tonight?”

“No, I’ll wait here, son. You’d better get back to the office and help Jethro. I’ll call if anything happens here.”

“Okay.”

Ardal was ready to leave and he couldn’t find Rowan. He waited around outside in the parking lot for her for a few minutes and she didn’t show up.

She’s in Hinton on her own. Can’t be good.
